The Awards carry a total of Nineteen (19) categories including the Minister of Sport and Recreation Award categories. The categories recognise: individuals; males; females; people with a disability; national and international participants; national federations; recreation bodies, schools, indigenous games, sport legends, media and community sport builders.

The Provincial Sport and Recreation Departments host Provincial Awards, where winners of the 17 categories are nominated to the National Sport Awards. National Federations also host their annual awards, they submit their nominations according to the timelines and requirements as stipulated in the rulebook.
All the received nominations are subjected to an audit process by an appointed firm of professional Auditors. The Voting Panel under the facilitation of appointed auditors shortlist and chose finalists that get announced as Nominees in the different 17 categories of the awards.
The Main Event of the Sport Awards
The SA Sport Awards 2017 Ceremony will be held on Sunday; 12 November 2017 at the Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni Municipality.
Nature of the Event:
t is a black tie, formal and glamour with red carpet and media spectacle. Guests must dress up in tuxedo and ball gowns. The event is broadcast live on SABC 1 and SuperSport from 20:00.
